Mountain Man

Last week’s Folk Bloke, for all my moaning about a lack of good new tracks for me to play, actually had some really cool stuff on it. From CSLSX’s sampling of Mountain Man in what’s essentially an ’80s electronic track to Barna Howard’s spectacular Bob Dylan impression alongside new singles from First Aid Kit and Lambchop and old tracks from Andrew Bird and Kill It Kid, it was, basically, enjoyable. Click play above to experience said enjoyment.

Part two of round-up day on MFAGW comes in the form of my Christmas Day show for DIY Radio, a (mercifully for some, I’m sure) mostly presenter-free episode where I played a stream of my favourite Folk Bloke tracks of the year. If nothing else, it’s a bloody good line-up of music – Bill Callahan, Alessi’s Ark, Saintseneca, Rob St. John and, obviously Josh T. Pearson all make appearances. If you want an hour of delightful music to reminisce on, stick it on and lay back.

This might be my favourite episode of The Folk Bloke yet – not for any actually professional reasons, just because I managed to get songs from Skyrim and Future of the Left into it.

This is a week late, but technically it doesn’t matter because my computer exploded violently this week and so I didn’t do a show. There are a fair few new bands’ tracks on last week’s show and, whilst I urge you to listen to me talk about them, I thought I’d give them some extra airing as the appendix to this post. As such, I will only be offering blanket criticism to all of them, and in order to learn more about my thoughts, you have to listen to this week’s show. Clever, eh?

All of these tracks are “well good”.

What happens when I find a new Mountain Man song I haven’t heard before? Why, I post it up here straight away, silly! I always do that!

‘Bath Tub’ apparently existed prior to the group’s first album, recorded live in a barn. The outliers of Mountain Man’s oeuvre seem far more expressionistic – where the tracks on Made the Harbor resonate with simple melodies and beautiful execution, singular tracks like this and the wonderful ‘Vision’ seem more concerned with portraying mood rather than story. But why am I pontificating over any of this anyway? I love it all.

You lot are screwed when the next album comes out.

Today, DIY Radio broadcast the first episode of my new weekly show, The Folk Bloke, and that’s what you can see above. If you like the kind of thing I post here, you’re more than likely to approve of the show, so please do listen in. Please? Oh, go on. Please?
