The Sound of Illness

I felt like death during this show so I filled full of music that meant I didn’t have to talk. Luckily, that meant Meursault got a double bill and lots of big, long songs got some nice airing out. Depending on whether you’re me or not, that could be a good thing.

 

The Best of The Folk Bloke 2011

Part two of round-up day on MFAGW comes in the form of my Christmas Day show for DIY Radio, a (mercifully for some, I’m sure) mostly presenter-free episode where I played a stream of my favourite Folk Bloke tracks of the year. If nothing else, it’s a bloody good line-up of music – Bill Callahan, Alessi’s Ark, Saintseneca, Rob St. John and, obviously Josh T. Pearson all make appearances. If you want an hour of delightful music to reminisce on, stick it on and lay back.

I actually really enjoyed this show – I got to play Barenaked Ladies, pretend to decode digital messages and discovered Momus & John Henriksson – but all that’s mattered since is that I set up a competition to win Josh T. Pearson’s Last of the Country Gentlemen. The problem is, I paid for the prize, so if I really wanted people to actually enter it, and so I’ve ended up spamming my way across Twitter like a gigantic, self-obsessed Josh T. Pearson fan.

Laura Marling – Tyne Theatre, 19th April

This is very lazy (again), but a nice big live review of Laura Marling (amongst others) on her latest UK tour is up on my new favourite site, For Folk’s Sake. But, for the sake of so me original material, here are some things I didn’t include in that review:

- As Alessi played my girlfriend turned to me wide-eyed and whispered, ‘She’s adorable!’

- I now prefer theatres to regular venues; no-one talks through songs, no-one disrespects support artists (well, apart from latecomers) and it feels more like a ‘show’.

- In hindsight, I didn’t give Boy & Bear enough credit, they were pretty awesome (plus, I now have two Australian folk acts in two posts).

- I didn’t say a proper goodbye. Bye!
